FA Tesco Skills training

The under 6/7/8 squads had a great session with Bobby Green from the FA Tesco Skills programme last night and five coaches had a master class in how to encourage youngsters to look for space, make and receive passes, and support the player with the ball. We are doing this again on 4 January at Brookfield School, at 1730. Do come along to watch and learn. Here are a couple of photos from last night.

wirksworth

Another physical battle was expected and we werent denied this. Another game which saw the two different sides of junior blues, the quick ,quality passing play that looks excellent at times and the indecisiveness that costs us silly goals at times, but with the steel that has been added to the squad and the togetherness the boys are developing i do believe they finally believe just how good they can be and the confidence is showing through, another four goal haul for the excellent kyle martin his 20th, 21st,22nd and 23rd of the year, one for ryan bramwells excellent efforts, captain isaac dale and the excellent man of the match elliott savidge saw us beat wirksworth 7-4,three more points and another trip to the freezing peaks over with, matlock next week means we have been over there 5 times in a row…

semi finals again

After having the game cancelled the previous week due to fog, junior blues turned in another excellent performance to win the quarter finals 3-2,joe missed out on this one so man of the match  ryan deputised in goal but was picking the ball out of the net after 2 mins as an excellent hawks free kick beat him at the far post…undeterred though junior blues fought back to lead 2-1 just before half time through kyle and the industrious azza and we thought we would come in at half time with a lead but a defensive error gave the hawks a second goal…second half was like a training routine and hawks never really got out of their own half with the winner coming from the excellent kyle martin, yet again proving that his transformation from centre half to striker really is reaping rewards,on to the semi finals boys!!!!

Changes to youth football

At the Rowsley League Clubs meeting last night, writes Oliver Couch, I reminded the club representatives of some of the headline changes to youth football that the FA are considering following their highly successful national consultation “Your Kids Your Say”. After masses of research, including asking kids, investigating how other countries develop kids, and over 100 national consultation events, the FA are thinking about

  • 5-a-side games at under 7 and under 8, keeping 7-a-side at under 9 and under 10, and playing 9-a-side at under 11 and under 12 as already agreed
  • playing mini-soccer in three mini-seasons over a year, with development games as now but also with competitive games three times a year, and a winter break
  • setting up county and regional competitions for the very best players at under 13 and above, linking with academies and centres of excellence in professional clubs; and
  • basing playing age groups not on age at 1 September but on calendar years.

The point of all this is to improve kids’ chances to develop football skills and progress to elite levels of the game if they have the dedication and the desire. There will always be room for the majority who just want to have fun playing the game but the lack of success of the national England team has prompted the FA to go back to the grass roots and suggest changes there.

For me this links with two other developments. First, the introduction of the FA Youth Award Modules for coaches, which are essential preparation for any coach hoping to excel with young players and, second, the book “The Future Game – Grassroots” which provides the underlying philosophy and practice essential to giving kids the best chance of success. All three taken together show the importance the FA attaches to improving grassroots football. Now, if only we could afford decent pitches!
